Wien - Mit seinem Selbstporträt mit einbandagierten Kopf und Gabeln in den Augen und Bildern von misshandelten Kindern sorgte er schon in den 70er Jahren für handfeste Skandale: jetzt präsentiert Gottfried Helnwein im Linzer Lentos Museum seine erste Museumsausstellung in Österreich seit dem Jahr 1985. Am Sonntag, 12. März 2006, erzählt der Künstler über sein Leben zwischen seinem Atelier in Downtown Los Angeles und seinem Schloss in Irland ...

DVT: I'm in London. Manson and I got married last weekend in Ireland. Our friend, the artist Gottfried Helnwein, has a castle there, which is where we had the wedding.
SP: [laughs] Did you have fun? Was it great?
DVT: I had the time of my life. I think we both did.
SP: What did you wear?
DVT: I wore a giant purple silk-and-grosgrain taffeta dress by Vivienne Westwood and a Mr. Pearl corset. I also wore a little tricorn hat from Stephen Jones. I didn't want a white wedding or a Gothic wedding. It was somewhere in between-just beautiful, rich colors everywhere. ...

"Meine Arbeit war eigentlich immer ein Versuch mit dem, was auf mich einwirkt, zurecht zu kommen oder zu darauf zu reagieren und manchmal auch sich zu wehren oder zurückzuschlagen. Ich wollte einfach alles erleben und ausprobieren und habe mir auch eine große Reihe von Feinden gemacht. Ich habe nie in dem Sinn karrierestrategisch gedacht. Ich arbeite mit vielen verschiedenen Medien sehr eklektizistisch. Ich glaube, das ist die einzige Form, in der man als Künstler heutzutage mit so viel Information umgehen kann. Ich mache Fotografie, Malerei, Bühnenbilder, Videos. Jetzt arbeite ich mit Sean Penn an einem Filmprojekt. Diese Grenzüberschreitung ist für mich immer ganz wichtig gewesen. Für mich gibt es diese Barriere zwischen verschiedenen Medien oder Stilen nicht so sehr". ...

Sie haben gesagt, Sie wären gerne Revolutionsführer geworden. Warum Revolutionsführer?
Helnwein: Eigentlich von Kindheit an. Das waren meine Tagträume in der Schule, ich saß immer da und kam mir so fremd und isoliert vor, so völlig ohne Bezug zu dem ganzen Geschehen. Ich dachte immer ich bin im falschen Film,- da gehöre ich gar nicht hin. Dann hab ich mir immer ausgemalt, wie ich eine Revolution im ganzen Land starten, und wie die Schule brennen würde. Damals wusste ich noch nichts von Che Guevara, das war wirklich eine eine kindliche Phantasie ohne Realitätsanspruch. Maler wollte ich auf jeden Fall nie werden, die Vorstellung mit einer Baskenmütze und Rauschebart vor einer Staffelei zu stehen und abstrakte Ölbilder zu malen schien eine wahrlich grauenhafte Existenz zu sein. ...

"... I believe the cure for any depression is expression in your heart, and Gottfried Helnwein was one of the most supportive people towards me. He was the one who gave me that advice, and he was correct with it.
'Personal Jesus' says everything that I would say if I were to write a song right now. I was listening to it on a CD I just bought because I wanted to really take a step away from the world. I wasn't sure if I was going to put out a 'best of' or if I was going to do anything in general with music, because there's a frustration level that the more commercial you are, the more marginal you are - also, the lack of art that exists in entertainment, and the lack of interest. People are much more content with watching The Real World and reality television, than living their own lives, or watching something that comes from imagination.
You know what it is? It's not even Bush's fault. It's America making itself the Third Reich.
Imagination is a necessity, and I don't think it's sort of bad. I can dream up some image like I did with Helnwein, and they're "bad," they're forbidden, but I can take an image that's far worse, that's on CNN and it's reality. So we can't get censored. It's the real world.
But that's a bad message to send to kids growing up, I think.

...I was not allowed to put the paintings on the cover of the record! Our anticipation was not to create album artwork. We wanted to collaborate and create something together, and we did not consider the Golden Age of Grotesque to be limited to an album.
...All I can say about it is I'm glad that it makes it into the collection of images that represent me as best as it could. I think that it just scratches the surface of what Gottfried and I could do together"

O mein Gott. Mit so einer Frage fangen wir an? Keine Ahnung, was ich da sagen würde. Die Frage stellt sich doch nie. Ich würde überhaupt niemandem meine Bilder erklären, weder einem Blinden noch einem Sehendem. ...

KURIER: Was verbindet Sie mit Marilyn Manson?
GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN: Ich glaube, dass wir beide nicht einzuordnen sind. Der Manson ist ja einer, der über das Klischee des Rockmusikers hinausgeht, der hervorragende Performancekunst macht, sehr gut mit visuellen Dingen arbeitet und ausgezeichnet schreibt. ...

Ihre Bilder erzählen von Deformation und Einsamkeit. Auf der Bühne hingen gestern riesige Gemälde, die Sie mit Micky-Maus-Ohren zeigen. Der österreichische Künstler Gottfried Helnwein hat sie angefertigt.

Wie ist die Zusammenarbeit mit Marilyn Manson entstanden?
GOTTFRIED HELNWEIN: Ich habe ihn vor einem Jahr kennen gelernt, seitdem arbeiten wir an verschiedenen Projekten. Unter anderem an Videos und Street Performances. Wir planen auch, gemeinsam eine Installation in Wien zu machen. ...

SZ: Grundsätzlich kann es ja trostreich sein, sich mit dem Dunklen . . .

About a year ago, I hooked up with Gottfried Helnwein, and he and I have been working together on various projects that, again, cross the boundaries between photography, painting, film, and installation. It's part of what I'm going to unleash and put into effect as the next couple of months unfold. It's stuff that people dont get to see anymore; it's stuff that happened in the '30s, '40s, '50s and even the '60s with the Panic Movement and Action.
