Empört sind viele OÖN-Leserinnen und -Leser über die Gemälde, die der Künstler Gottfried Helnwein derzeit im Linzer Kunstmuseum Lentos präsentiert. Viele Eltern sind besorgt, dass ihre Kinder dort mit Inhalten konfrontiert werden, die sie noch überfordern. Das stimmt. Auch für viele Erwachsene sind die Themen Helnweins kaum zu bewältigen. Denn er ist ein Maler, der sich trotz seiner täuschend "schönen" altmeisterlichen Technik nicht in Oberflächen erschöpft. Helnwein legt vielmehr genau jene Dinge bloß, die in unserer Gesellschaft nur allzu gerne zugedeckt werden: Physische/ psychische Gewalt, körperliche Dysfunktionen. "Face it" è intitolata la prima retrospettiva di Gottfried Helnwein in Austria dopo 20 anni, inauguratasi il 9 marzo al Lentos Museum di Linz.
Helnwein, nato nel 1948 a Vienna, vive e lavora tra Los Angeles e l'Irlanda dagli anni ’70 ed è famoso per i suoi ritratti iperrealistici, che spesso hanno come oggetto bambini, personaggi feriti, deturpati e sfigurati. Non solo nella sua patria ha la fama di artista provocante e scioccante. La rassegna al Museo Lentos mette ora in luce i vari tragitti nella sua opera, una mostra che non passerà certamente inosservata al pubblico. ...

Im großen Ausstellungssaal des Lentos Museums wird im Frühjahr 2006 eine umfassende Werkschau von Gottfried Helnwein präsentiert. Das Lentos organisiert damit die erste museale Schau des Künstlers in Österreich, seit er sein Geburtsland – Helnwein ist 1948 in Wien geboren - Mitte der 1980er Jahre verlassen hat.
Angesichts der substanziellen Weiterentwicklung seines Werks, verbunden mit neuen Bildfindungen und dem Einsatz neuer Medien (digitale Fotografie, Video) gilt es, dieses Oeuvre heute umfassend zu betrachten.
