In today's world, the malevolent forces of war, poverty, sexual exploitation, and the numbing predatory influence of modern media assault the virtue of children. Helnwein--who grew up in Austria in the years following World War II in the somber atmosphere of a defeated country that had embraced Nazism--has an emotional tie to children who have been robbed of experiencing childhood without trauma. De Close Up documentaire ‘Donald Duck: Meer Dan een Eend’ onderzoekt het succes en de blijvende aantrekkingskracht van de wereldberoemde eend. Waarom is hij in Europa populairder dan in de Verenigde Staten? Wat is het geheim van de twee turven hoge antiheld? Waarom zijn zoveel kunstenaars dol op deze eend?
In de documentaire laten kunstenaars, wetenschappers en kenners hun licht schijnen over het fenomeen Duck. Kunstenaar Gottfried Helnwein noemt Donald Duck de belangrijkste ontwikkeling uit de kunstgeschiedenis.
‘Donald Duck: Meer Dan een Eend’ voert de kijker van een Iers kasteel naar een Fins buitenhuis, van het Duitse Heidelberg naar Hollywood, van Utrecht naar Timboektoe. Deze webpagina werd gemaakt door Sarah Rombouts, een studente van de 2 kandidatuur Kunstwetenschappen van de Universiteit Gent, als jaaropdracht voor het vak Informatica Toegepast op Kunst.
Zijn kunst heeft een doel: Helnwein wil provoceren, wil dat de toeschouwers nadenken. Door alle dagen gewonde en verminkte kinderen op televisie en in de kranten te zien raakt onze maatschappij immuun voor die beelden. Door die beelden hyperrealistisch te schilderen in een subtiele en delicate pasteltechniek, maakt hij die beelden weer zienbaar voor de toeschouwers, die er terug walging voor (kunnen) krijgen. Hij is de eerste Duitstalige kunstenaar die na de Tweede Wereldoorlog zo expliciet verwijst naar de gruwelen en het geweld die onder het Nazi-regime gebeurd zijn. Een bekend voorbeeld hiervan is zijn protest tegen dr. Gross, die tijdens het regime van de nazi's honderden kinderen vergiftigd had op, volgens de dokter, humane wijze. ...

Marilyn Manson colaboreaza cu legendarul pictor Gottfried Helnwein, in intentia de a plasa arta acolo unde cei doi considera ca i-ar fi locul, mai precis la extremitatile perceptiei. Faptul ca Helnwein apeleaza tot mai des la subiecte tabu i-a asigurat acestuia un loc de frunte in muzeele din New York, Berlin, Viena si Zurich. Helnwein a mai lucrat si cu Marlene Dietrich, fiind ales de catre Time Magazine pentru a realiza portretul lui JFK cu ocazia celei de-a 20-a aniversare a asasinatului caruia i-a cazut victima.
Lupta pe care Helnwein o duce pentru a elibera exprimarea de opresiunea canoanelor este principalul motiv pentru care Manson si l-a ales ca partener in ale artei, el insusi un cautator al noilor matce culturale care sa produca un sincretism autentic al vietii . ...

Doppelherz. Double Heart, if I’m not mistaken. Gottfried Helnwein, controversial German artist, had a part in this, and it seems pseudo-planned, but mostly stoned/wasted/drunk candid shots in the creepiest locations and situations to have ever existed.
The soundtrack consists of Thaeter being played over and over and over (for 26 minutes, the length of this film) and stilted, monotonous, broken words being stumbled through on top of this. A note at the end of the film leaves us to believe these words may have been intended as a vocal suicide note from Manson. Words like “I’m a canvas that bleeds and I’m painted with fingers”, “everything in this world has already been created so we can only dream up new ways of destroying them,” and “I want downloadable suicide” repeated over and over and over, twisted themselves and their speaker. You can hear as his voice breaks, as he can’t quite say the words he’s trying to say, as he sniffs and is maybe even crying.
Just the noises are enough to knock me senseless, before letting me go cower in the corner.

It’s like David Lynch directed it, only even David Lynch would be more merciful. If you’re a fan of Manson for the music, don’t bother with the DVD edition, you’re just going to be scared off. If you appreciate scary, disturbing art flicks that destroy your mind, then maybe you’re almost prepared.
I want to say it doesn’t make sense, but it would be a lie. There’s almost a plot, it’s just all broken in pieces, fixated on the oddest images. There are two basic processions spliced together as Manson drones his bitter words in a tired voice. ...

In een vorig berichtje had ik het al over de soms angstaanjagende aantrekkingskracht van clowns. Een berichtje op Bouzou herinnerde me aan het bestaan van de Oostenrijkse kunstenaar Gottfried Helnwein, die ergens op gelijkaardige dubbelzinnige gevoelens inspeelt.
Beelden en iconen die je normaalgesproken met absolute puurheid associeert, worden in zijn werk beroofd van al hun onschuld. Kijk maar eens wat hij uitspookt met Mickey Mouse of Donald Duck. De vege plannetjes staan zo van hun gezicht af te lezen. Het omgekeerde kan natuurlijk ook.
Ook wreedheid en leedvermaak krijgen een plaats in het werk van de ietwat omstreden kunstenaar. Hij werkt ook wel eens samen met aanverwante geesten als Marylin Manson of Rammstein. ...

sehr interessanter künstler, dessen homepage www.helnwein.de sehr viele fotografien beinhaltet. einige besonders schöne, des fotografen, der fähig zu sein scheint in einem bild hoffnungslosigkeit, trauer, angst, ekel auszudrücken und dabei poetisch zu bleiben und fähig ist die möglichkeiten der fotografie auszuloten. die werke erinnern immer wieder an bilder von bacon oder die verse baudelaires, die häßlichkeit ästhetisierend ...

Qui a-il de s'y génial? Comment peut-on oser comparer ce genre de pratique avec des artistes comme Gottfried Helnwein, qui est peu connu au Québec malheureusement. Monsieur Henlwein arrive à faire des peintures immenses qui couvrent presque les murs de cathédrales autrichiennes à elles seules, et nul ne sait dire s'il s'agit de photographies ou peintures... Bref, il y a de tous les goûts dans la nature mais il y a aussi différents niveaux de talent. Riopelle est l'un de nos plus grands peintres au Québec, je le sais, mais je ne saurais dire pourquoi. Il y a peut-être matière a réflexion. Après plusieurs cours sur l'histoire de l'art, je connais assez bien le parcours artistique de Riopelle. Il a signé le Refus Global et ainsi donné de nouvelles directions à l'art. ...

Das von Peter Hajek 1984 inszenierte Porträt begibt sich auf die Spuren von Helnweins Leben und Werk. Er wurde in den 1970er-Jahren vor allem durch seine hyperrealistischen Bilder von verwundeten und bandagierten Kindern bekannt und hat sich seit den 1980er-Jahren vor allem der Fotografie und großformatigen Installationen im öffentlichen Raum – meistens mit einem sozialen oder gesellschaftspolitischen Anliegen – zugewandt. Kinder, oft seine eigenen, sind auch der Rahmen, in dem Helnwein bei der Arbeit, im Familienverbund oder beim Spiel präsentiert wird und durch welchen er in dieser Mischform aus fiktivem Dokument und realer Fiktion sowohl künstlerisch als auch sozial kommuniziert ...
