I saw Sean Mellyn work somewhere in brooklyn while ago...I don't remember the gallery space...it might have been pierogi but I'm not sure...as far as handling of paint goes it's OK but nothing to rave about...there is another not known artist with handling of paint just as good actually better and even though I'm not a huge fan (subject matter is too repetative) and thats tim slowinski...or how about odd nerdrum...or gottfried helnwein if you just wanna talk about paint handling these two are far superior...and perhaps being a child of an "ironic culture" has something to do with you liking the paintings...perhaps me being a child of a violent one has something to do with not liking them...
I understand the subjectivity in art but I was hoping we'd stop breeding new "quirku" warhols
I remember being about 5 years old when my father brought home a dali book...I went to the pages and to this day I remember the headache I got after seeing the images ..perhaps it's not a response I want from a painting but at least it is an immediate response...that's all I'm looking for...not indifference or a response after a long study of the subject matter or paint handling....if the painting is good it will strike me in a gallery or on the computer screen...

That's a naive statement.
A painting cannot be judged from a computer screen any more than it can be from a magazine or an auction catalog.
I've never seen Sean Mellyn's paintings (where does he show?), but I've seen Nerdrum's and Helnwein's. They are technically exceptional, but what gives with the subject matter?

have you ever seen the pyramids...or mount everest in real life...or how about taj mahal or a war zone...please...all those things have an effect when shown in pictures...no they are not like a real thing but it doesent mean I can't make a judgement...hey if that was the case internet porn wouldn't be making the money it is....
as for helnwein or nerdrum...what's the problem with the subject matter...I dont get your statement...
