HELNWEIN'S SET AND COSTUMES FOR THE OPERA "THE CHILD DREAMS"
One of the most important productions of the Israeli Opera's 25th anniversary season will be the world premiere of the commissioned opera The Child Dreams, based on a most poetic and lyric play by the late Hanoch Levin, undoubtedly, one of Israel's greatest playwrights, composed by young and internationally acknowledges Israeli composer Gil Shohat, directed by Omri Nitzan and designed by renowned international visual artist Gottfried Helnwein. This play turned opera describes a journey of escape towards the unknown, people immigrating to a new land in order to run away from a threatening past and find a comforting future as death and despair intertwine with a hope for a better future. David Stern, the Israeli Opera's music director, will conduct this new opera featuring closed to 20 Israeli opera singers on the stage.

PROPHETIC DEAD CHILD:
"I saw an angel: He was sailing in the sun,
diving slowly as if in a sea of honey, and he came down and whispered to me: "Oh little lambs, silent screamers, oh. my tender, impatient dead, a tiny error was made in the inventory and now it's final: one more child." |

(a silence of disbelief)

Gottfried Helnwein in einem Gespräch mit Peter Nedoma, dem Direktor der Galerie Rudolfinum in Prag
April, 2008: |
||
|
"Die Entdeckung des Theaterstückes "The Child Dreams" von Hanoch Levin war ein Schock und eine Epiphanie für mich, denn noch nie war die künstlerische Arbeit eines anderen so nah an meinen eigenen innersten Bildern. Es ist als hätte er dieses Stück ausschliesslich all den Kindern gewidmet, die bisher in meinem Werk aufgetaucht sind - und all jenen, die noch kommen werden."
