"...When I look at a work of Art I ask myself: does it challenge me, does it touch, move or inspire me? Do I learn something from it, does it startle or amaze me - do I get excited, upset?
That is the test any artwork has to pass: can it create an emotional impact on a human being even when he has no education or any information about art? I’ve always had a problem with art that you can only understand if you have a degree in art history, and I have a problem with theories in general. Most of them are bullshit anyway.
Most critics and theorists have little respect for artists, and I think the importance of theory in art is totally overrated. Real art is self-evident. Real art is intense, challenging, enchanting, exciting and unsettling; it has a quality and magic that you cannot explain. Like the Blues, a poem of Rimbaud or Rembrandt's late self-portraits.
Art is not logic, and if you really want to experience it, your mind and rational thinking will be of little help. Art is something spiritual that you can only experience with your senses, your heart, your soul. Think of Bob Dylan, Hendrix, Mozart, Howling Wolf, Goya, Bukowski or Robert Crumb - do you need to know the theories that some busybodies might attach to their art in order to experience it?
Marcel Duchamp said: "The work of art is always based on the two poles of the onlooker and the maker, and the spark that comes from the bipolar action gives birth to something - like electricity."

Historian Peter Selz has compared Gottfried Helnwein's tortured, screaming, and bandaged self-portraits to Messerschmidt's sculptural self-portraits,
but the artist has said, " The reason why I took up the subject of self-portraits and why I have put myself on stage was to function as a kind of representative.
There is nothing autobiographical, no therapy, and it says nothing about me personally.

The work depicts a Madonnalike mother displaying her baby to attentive Nazi officers, Painted in hyperrealist grisaille with chiaroscuro effects, the work resembles an old documentary photograph made huge. The eerie, sinister overtones are unmistakable. Who is this mother? What do these officers want with her and her child? What kind of official paper might the officer on the left hold in his hand and what might be its result? Helnwein, characteristically, presents us with an ambiguous, haunting image and leaves us to wonder about its meaning...

Aucune disposition d'âme n'a occupé si longtemps l'Occident. Les Grecs l'appelaient la bile noire (melangkholia, qui donnera le mot mélancolie). Aristote s'étonnait que cette humeur réputée néfaste touche la plupart des hommes d'exception. Elle est par tradition cause de souffrance et de folie, et sa désignation comme "maladie sacrée" implique une dualité. Les artistes de l'Antiquité la représentèrent sous la forme d'êtres pensifs, tête inclinée posée sur la main, regard perdu où se devine une sourde douleur. Au fil des siècles, l'image du mélancolique changera peu - 'le Portrait du Dr Gachet', de Van Gogh, ou la sculpture hyperréaliste de l'Australien Ron Mueck ('Big Man', 2000) respectent cette iconographie. Devenue saturnienne, puis reclassée dans la grande famille des dépressions, la mélancolie a toujours inspiré les artistes qui, pour en être victimes dans les périodes de doute et d'impuissance, connaissent son charme mortifère. Die Ausstellung präsentiert vierzig ausgewählte Statements großer Photographen des 20.Jahrhunderts:
von Cartier-Bresson, Lebeck, Chargesheimer bis zu Klauke und Helnwein wird jeweils eine bedeutende künstlerische Position gezeigt.
Die Ausstellung konzentriert sich nicht auf das Einzelbild, sondern komponiert ganze Werkgruppen zu großformatigen Tableaus und unterstreicht so den "journalistischen Aspekt" in der Photographie dieses Jahrhunderts.
Einen Abschluß findet dieser Jahrhundertrückblick in drei künstlerischen Positionen, die in sehr persönlicher Weise Stellung zur gesellschaftlichen Situation beziehen:
Jürgen Klaukes "Self Performance" (1972/73), Philip Pococks Berliner Szenen (1982)
sowie Gottfried Helnweins "Poems" (1998). ...

The early stages of this monumental head can be seen in Helnwein's widely varied portrayals from the seventies of suffering children, but above all in the Cologne installation of anonymous children's portraits "9th November Night" from 1988.
The human face, in particular the child's face, is of great fascination for Helnwein and consequently accounts for one of his central pictorial subjects. The monumental face of a little girl which is introduced here is, as it were, representative of all children. In our adult society oriented towards profit and success, children can almost be described as a fringe group, their interests indeed being observed in a comparatively modest fashion. Against this background, this monumentalizing of the face in connection with the hyperrealistic style of painting is to be understood as an oppressive irritation of our customary experience of perception.
Originally the child's head was shown in a Minorite church in Krems, Stein; in fact it was placed at the focal point of a huge early Gothic room which lent the picture a positively sacral tone. ...

In seinen Gemälden und Grafiken arbeitet Helnwein besonders in der Mitte der 80er Jahre gleichzeitig mit unterschiedlichen Techniken: Abstrakte, gestische und monochrome Malerei stehen neben Fotorealistischen Porträts, Aquarell und Zeichnung neben Fotografie, die er zum Teil stark überarbeitet.
Dabei integriert er Bildzitate aus Politik, Massenmedien und Trivialkultur. Bevorzugter Gegenstand seiner Arbeiten sind Kinderbilder, Porträts und Menschen in einem oft trostlosen Stadtraum. ...

Das Gewaltthema und das Thema "der als Opfer" setzten sich von Beckmanns früher Arbeit von 1907 bis zum heutigen Tag fort. Bei Bruce Naumann, Marcel Odenbach, Jeff Wall und Gottfried Helnwein wandeln sich zwar die künstlerischen Mittel radikal, nicht aber das Thema selbst.
Helnweins faszinierendes Oeuvre umfaßt absolute Gegensätze. Helnwein ist ein Künstler der kompromißlosen Aussagen: Das Triviale, etwa der Disneykultur, wechselt ab mit Untergangsvisionen der Seele, die Göttlichkeit des Kindes kontrastiert mit Horrorbildern von Kinderschändung. Sein Grundthema aber bleibt die Gewalt, das physische und seelische Leid, das ein Mensch dem anderen zufügt. Der Künstler variiert dieses Thema innerhalb zweier Komplexe, die sich über viele Jahre hin durch sein Werk ziehen. ...
